“I double dare you!”
“Well fine
fine
here goes!”
I jumped off the roof expecting that
indeed
I would land on the lawn
and hopefully
not
break anything
but
instead
a wind swept me up
and
when I descended
to the
ground
it was smooth and easy
He looked at me
astonished
and
nervous
because now
he would have to jump
or
chicken out
“Your turn!”
I yelled up at him
He jumped
he did
he lept out from the roof
and
damn
if the same thing
didn’t happen
gust of wind
out of nowhere
and
he landed
smooth as butter
We both were ecstatic
“Mom dad
God saved us
God saved us!”
I ran into my house
he ran into his
We are still best friends
years later
We share this knowledge
this
bond
We have told a few people
over
the years
all of whom
listen
and then start talking about something else
very
quickly
We decided to
keep
it
to
ourselves
Except on those days
when
we are very troubled
something
has occurred
that is difficult
and
either one of us
may
have
great sorrow
On those days
one or
the other of us
sits on a roof
If you see either of us there
it’s ok
just wave
it’s ok
Funny thing is
on occasion
someone from the sidewalk yells
“Don’t jump!”
