Ok,
I
will
try

And
so
I
walked
to the very end
of
the pier

Stood
at
the railing
the
ocean
below
hugging
the
pilings
like children
grabbing first onto
daddy’s ankles
then
mom’s
dress

I spoke
so forcefully
to
the
distance —

“If you
can
hear
me,
and
I
hope you can,
please
help,
please!
Things
are
a
mess
here,
truly!”

A nearby
fisherman
looked
at
me,
blinked,
waved,
but did
not
understand
a
word
that I said

Nothing
came
of
my
entreaty
not
a
thing

I
trudged
back
to
the car,
head
down,
passing
couples
holding hands
others
chatting
some
sitting
looking out
all
so
oblivious

Yet
the whole sky
shone
as if
lit
by
multitudes of candles

My back
to it
I
did
not
notice

Got into
my
car
drove
home
and
sulked

Wrapped
myself
in
a blanket
of
darkness

A bird
came
to
the window
pecked
at
it
and
caught
my attention

Then
I
saw
it

Then
I
saw
it!

Rivers run
full,
just
wade
into one,
splash
around,
immerse
yourself
in
the
water,
cleanse
your
very soul!

Just
don’t
turn
your
back
too
long
to
the
sky

Face it

Face the horizon!
