“I miss her
more
than
I
thought
even
possible”

With
those words
he
stepped
back
from the podium
and
returned to his seat

I heard
crying

The sun
was
so bright when
we all
went
outside

A lot
of
people
there
to
whisper
“Good bye!”

I don’t entirely
remember
walking
to
my
car

Drove
slowly
away,
turned
on
the
radio,
and
a
Beach Boys song
had
just
started:

If everybody had an ocean
Across the u.s.a.
Then everybody’d be surfin’
Like californi-a
You’d seem ’em wearing their baggies
Huarachi sandals too
A bushy bushy blonde hairdo
Surfin’ U.S.A

Once home
my
wonderful
dog
was
so glad
to see me

Turned on
the
television
to learn:
“A fire is raging
in
the hills
and
people
have
to
evacuate”

Over the
hours
I
just
kept
hearing
what
he said:

“I miss her
more than
I
thought
even
possible”

Next thing you know
I
typed this
note
to make sure
it
is
recorded
for
posterity

And
I gently
put a candle
in the window

Now,
it is
hours
later

I am
having
so much
trouble sleeping

You’d catch ’em surfin’ at del mar
Ventura county line
Santa cruz and trestle
Australia’s narabine
All over manhattan
And down doheny way
Everybody’s gone surfin’
Surfin’ U.S.A
